Villa Contarini (Este)

Villa Contarini, also known as ''Vigna Contarena'', is a villa in Este, Province of Padua, in the Veneto region of northern Italy.
The name ''Vigna Contarena'' (''vigna'' meaning « vineyard ») seems to come from the fruit trees and vines originally cultivated in the park of the villa. Situated at the foot of the Euganean Hills, the villa represented in fact a perferct place for these kinds of cultivation.
It was built in the 17th century by Giorgio Contarini, a Senator of the Republic of Venice and a descendant of the prestigious branch of “degli Scrigni”. The villa was originally destined for grape harvest celebrations. The structure of the building reflects the typical Venetian tendency to give more relevance to the noble floor rather than to the ground floor, which was destined for agricultural goods.
== History ==

The first works to the villa – which was formerly a hunting estate – were ordered in the first years of the 17th century by the Senator Giorgio Contarini (1584 – 1660)〔Jean Georgelin, Venise au siècle des lumières, Walter de Gruyter, 1978.〕 (it is reasonable to think that the grotesque frescoes of the villa were already present in the original building, since grotesque art dated back to the 15th century). However, because of Giorgio Contarini's young age at that time, it is more likely that the works would have been ordered by his father or his grandfather. Anyhow, the owner of the villa was an important person in Este, since it is known that he also commissioned the construction of the Porta di San Francesco (1595), one of the main city gates.
The main works included the realisation of the big park in front of the building and the expansion of the western wing, according to Late Renaissance canons.
In the 1660s the villa hosted personalities of that time like the Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo, during some of his pastoral visits.
In the 18th century it was ordered the construction of a big barchessa, the outhouse designed for farming activieties linked to the villa.
Despite the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797 and Napoleon's Italian campaigns, family Contarini kept the property of Vigna Contarena. However, in 1820-1821 the villa was sold to the Prussian Count of Haugwitz and after his death the property passed to several families. Since 1992 Vigna Contarena has been property of Caporali family.
